Dance + Movement Classes

Not your average dance studio

At KineoLab we provide a meaningful, developmentally appropriate curriculum that is sequential and holistic. In an enriched environment, our students are engaged mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially. Rooted in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies, our curriculum is taught by NYS Certified K-12 Dance teachers, Certified Movement Analysts, and follows the New York State Standards for Dance.

Unique

KineoLab acknowledges that we each possess our own movement signature, a combination of movement patterns and choices that are unique to our individual body-mind. This understanding forms the basis of our pedagogy. It is this signature or personal aesthetic that we nurture and grow at KineoLab, opening up a world of potential to our students, not only in dance but also in life.

Our students can expect more than rote exercises, and just learning teacher-directed steps. We understand that what we teach our students stays with them for the rest of their lives, so we take seriously the quality of programming that we offer. Though we do offer our students their time to shine for family and friends in our year-end student concert, this one event is not the goal of our training, merely a snapshot and a celebration of each student’s progress.

Balanced Training

Students enrolled in any of our courses or classes can expect a blend of teacher-directed learning and student-centered learning. Classes typically include opportunities for the student to engage in teacher led choreography and set exercises as well as creative work that allows the student to make their own creative choices and seek answers to improvisational and/or choreographic questions. This balance allows for a holistic training that develops a student’s technical abilities alongside and equal to their creative abilities.

Safe & Supportive Environment

Our expert faculty have decades of training and experience in dance and education. We draw from many years of working with undergraduate students in higher education, students in K-12 schools and those with complex disabilities, to establish a safe and supportive environment in which our students can grow and thrive as they learn to master their movement.

Measurable Growth

Throughout a student’s time with KineoLab they will meet once a year with our faculty to collaboratively develop and re-assess self-established goals that are then assessed twice a year alongside our general program benchmarks. This ensures that students are aware of both advances and areas in need of extra attention along their progress. It also serves as a roadmap in course placement.

Unlimited Potential

At KineoLab, we provide our students with the tools necessary to enable them to unlock their full movement potential. Having realized this potential, they can use their self-discovery to better navigate their environment, their relationships, and their life.

Our KineoKids program offers foundational training in movement to students who are 3-13 years of age. At KineoLab, we pair teacher-directed learning with student-centered learning, offering a well balanced program that trains students to master their movement while expanding their creative/artistic expression.

KineoKids Foundations I expands upon the students kinesthetic and self-awareness initiated in Explorers, by beginning their study and performance of dances, and expanding their understanding of and engagement with dance concepts, vocabulary, and symbols. Students learn to invent dance movements to create their own short dances, as they reflect on their own work and the work of others.

Foundations II

  • Meets twice a week

KineoKids Foundations 2 deepens the student’s expanded kinesthetic and self-awareness, while developing their strength, flexibility, and endurance. Students begin to layer compositional elements to create individual and group choreographies, while actively collaborating with others in class. Learning and performing more complex dances, students expand their dance vocabulary of words and symbols. As they refine their understanding of communication of ideas and themes in dance students begin to learn how to give constructive criticism. Use of interactive technology helps to support their learning in dance.
